Location: Western Germany
Documentation date: Autumn of 2020
This military airport was built in 1952 and used by the British Royal Air Force (RAF) until 1992. It was one of five so-called clutch stations that were located in Germany as far away as possible from the iron curtain – the former border between east and west during the Cold War which not only split Europe but also Germany itself in half after the end of World War II in 1945.
The western part of Germany was the Federal Republic of Germany and the eastern part the German Democratic Republic, until the final collapse of the latter resulted in the total conversion into the former in 1989.
After the RAF left, the compound was used for several years for music festivals, concerts and parties. In 2001 the party was permantently over, parts of the area were then converted to several industrial and commercial facilities.
However one third of the former airfield and a few shelters were left to be reclaimed by nature and are still freely accessible via hiking paths.
The last standing hangar is now used by a construction company. A lot of demolition waste is stored in the surrounding area, in the hangar itself lie huge piles of sand.
